7 ways to save more money

Posted by: vikdulat on: January 1, 2009

My goal in 2009 is to save as much money as possible.  One of the keys to a successful life and retirement is the amount of money you have saved up.  Here are some ways to save more money.

Drive less – Even though gas prices are at a 6 year low, I still spend close to $100/month on gas.  My goal is to drive ONLY when I need to.  Most of the times, the trips are I take on a daily basis can be grouped together into one big one on the weekend.

Make more money – Most people try to cut costs but more should look into finding a better job or a passive income. You should also consider going back to school.

Eat at home – The price of eating at home is significantly less than eating out.  The only part is getting yourself to start cooking at home or learning how to cook.

Pretend you are broke – This does wonders for me.  Whenever I have the urge to buy something new, I pretend I am broke.  I have money in the bank but I just pretend I do not have enough saved.

Use free resources – The library is a great way to rent DVDS.  Instead of going to the store at and spending $4 on a DVD, just go to your local library and get it for free.

Cut cable – Cable TV costs more than just money.  If you watch a lot of TV, you are wasting your life and becoming a couch potato.   This can lead to bigger complications in your future.  Just ditch cable TV and start reading and educating yourself.

Cut your home phone – Unless you really need to use your home phone, you cell phone should be sufficient enough if someone needs to get a hold of you.

The best way to save money on gas is not to drive one at all. You save money on gas, insurance. I take the subway everywhere I go since I live in New York.

Driving would be crazy. Just keep things simple and take local transit if possible.

A very solid list with some very feasible solutions. The way I save money on transportation is by taking public transit to school and work. Not only do I save money but I get to do my homework on the subway last minute.
