Saving $5 at a time

Posted by: vikdulat on: December 27, 2008

snowy-weather1On Christmas Day, it snowed close to 16 inches.  I had rented a Blue-Ray DVD (Death Race) the day before.  I had to return it before 5 pm or I would have been charged $5.   I asked a few of my friends what they would do.  A resounding 9 out of 10 people said just return it the next day and take the $5.

This is what is scary to me.  To the average person, it might only seem like $5 but if you apply this concept to more things, it will add up.  One of these concepts is the local library late fees.  It is $0.15 late charge per day per book.  For example, if you had 10 books checked out, that is $1.50 ($0.15 * 10) per day.  Let’s say you went on vacation and forgot about the books for 30 days, that ends up being $45.

Now the question is what can $45 buy:

1.  One and a half month’s of gym membership.
2.  45 rentals on Tuesdays and Thursdays.   It is $1 to rent a DVD (Blue-Ray! included) on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
3.  Close to two weeks of groceries for me.

I can go on and on but you get the point.  So next time when you can thinking of not returning something the day it is due, just think of the impact it will have on your finances.

Great point Vik. Every little thing adds up. I’m glad you are this dedicated in saving money.

Wow that is a lot of snow. In the picture, all I can see is white. I think if the public library is used the right way, you can save a lot of money.

$5 is nothing these days. In the future years, it will be nothing as well. I don’t see why you need to go in all that snow to save $5. You work full time. Just use that money.

A lot of people would say screw the $5, but you are totally correct, $5 here and there adds up.

Personally, growing up in Canada, snow is nothing but a way of life 4 months out of the year. Some stores will wave a late fee in bad weather if you call ahead, but if not, make the trek. Its exercise and in your favor.

@Brad, I agree with the library idea. You can save a lot of money on books and entertainment by getting a library card. Your taxes pay for this and it can help save money on DVD rentals and other items. My local library here in Indiana has a basement full of the latest DVD’s and its unbelievable the amount of people that drive FURTHER out of this town to get to a video store to pay for a rental (plus gas)

@ Aman I feel the same way. People are just too lazy to do anything. If you have a FREE source, why not use it?

At the end of the day, it is up to the person. If they do not want to take advantage of the free services, that is totally up to them.

Good point. Small amounts add up over time. I like the site.
