How to force yourself to save money

Posted by: vikdulat on: December 22, 2008

We all know how hard it is to save money these days.  I have found a way that works pretty well for me.   This all comes down to your goals.  My goal is to save $1500 a month.   That might seem like an unattainable goal but if you work at it, it just might work for you.

My local bank gives me a limit amount of debits on my debit card.  Here is the breakdown:

10 debits – service charge $4.95/month (waived if you have a minimum balance of $1000)

20 debits – service charge $8.95/month (waived if you have a minimum balance of $2000)

unlimited debits – service charged $12.95/month (waived if you have a minimum balance of $3000)

As you can see, that is a lot of charges for using your debit card.  Also, I use my debit card for everything.   For the amount of debits I do, I would need to get the unlimited debit plan.  This would cost me $155.4 a year ($12.95 * 12).  I am sure you can see that if you maintain a minimum balance, you do not have to pay it.

Obviously, I would want a minimum balance of $3000.  I started off at $1000 then $2000 and so on.  So in order for me to save the service charge, I am forced to maintain a minimum balance of $3000.  This works beautifully because I am saving the service charge fee and at the same time saving money in the bank.

Those are some good options.

I dont use my debit much, I do have an account in Canada with PC Financial (its a bank I use for my Canadian funds). With them, its no surcharge for anything! I can do as many debit transactions as I wanted without worry.

They also give you points you can redeem for groceries at Loblawes/No Frills etc and the accounts have good interest rates. I feel that all can maximize the “bang” for your buck so to speak

@ Aman. Nicely done. I have a student account with ScotiaBank that allows unlimited debit transactions.

A debit card with limits? That expects you to pay to use your money? I’d take my finances elsewhere.

I pay nothing for my account. No fees (unless I overdraw of course), my debit card is free, free online banking with bill pay, blah blah.

I thought pretty much all banks offered these services for nothing now a days.

You’d be doing yourself more of a favor to ditch that crappy bank, and plop that $1500 a month ’savings’ into an account where you were at least getting a little interest for it.

Dear Vik,
I can’t believe I’m doing this. I mean, I’ve never met you but I feel like I know you so well through your blog posts. What I’m really trying to say is… I think I’m in love. I’ve written you this poem to help convey my true emotions:

Hello super hunk,
Mr. Vik Dulat.
I was just wondering,
where did you school at?
Cuz I read your blog daily,
I find it smart and sexy.
I’m your biggest fan,
Hi my name is Lexi.
(The i is supposed to be dotted with a heart but I don’t know how to do that on the computer ^_^)
Your financial advice
Is the best one can get.
Not to mention,
It makes me super wet.
The way you crunch numbers,
with your fancy long division,
lets me know for sure,
you dont work at pearle vision.
That’s good to know,
and I don’t need to worry.
Cuz when we get married,
I know you’ll support me.
So in this holiday season,
know one thing is true.
That all I want for Christmas,
Baby… it’s you!!
