7 rules for grocery shopping

Posted by: vikdulat on: December 17, 2008

The majority of my expenses are groceries and gas.  Today I will be talking to you about how I save money while grocery shopping.

Rule # 1

Make sure you are full when you go grocery shopping.  I have tried this out and when I was full I ended up spending $56!  That might seem like a lot but over a year (52 weeks * $56) –> $2912. I go shopping every week and that is why I used 52 weeks.

Rule # 2

Use a basket rather than a cart.  I have noticed that when I get a cart, I have this urge that I need to fill it up for some odd reason.  With a basket, it is easier to carry and once it gets heavy, you know it’s time to check out.

Rule # 3

Only bring a certain amount of cash.  When I go grocery shopping, I usually take about 20-30.  Most of the time, my goal is to get groceries done under $25.

Rule # 4

Have a list.  This saves a lot of time and refrains you from buying extra items you do not need.

Rule # 5

Set a time on your shopping.  Do not go into a store and come out two hours later.  I get all my grocery shopping done in under 30 minutes.  It might take longer the first few times you go to a store since you do not know where everything is but after that, you should know where everything is.

Rule # 6

Stick to one store.  I tend to go to Super store where I live.  It has everything I need and most of the times, it is cheaper than other stores.  The reason I do this is because for one thing you save time and money.  The other main thing is if you go to more than one store, you will buy things from both stores that you do not need and those items end up going to waste.

Rule # 7

Use coupons! I do not care if the coupon is 5 cents off.  You are still saving 5 cents.  All these little amounts add up.

These were my 7 rules that I use while grocery shopping.  I would love to hear your tips.  Please share.

good tips, though I’m confused as to why you only carry $30 in cash when a good shopping trip for you when you are full is to only spend $56? Why limit your cash if you’re just going to pay for it with a card anyway (I assume thats what you must have done since you don’t carry enough cash)?

@ Strick I spent that much when I went on an empty stomach. That is why i ended up spending $56. Otherwise I like to spend under $30. Hope that cleared it up.

I like your tips except for #2. While that may work great for shopping for one or two, I shop for a family of three every other week and cart is essential make sure I have enough to last for those 2 weeks. Otherwise, great article.

@ Liz You are right Liz. It all depends on the size of the family you are feeding. I’m only one person so therefore I do not use a cart.

It all depends but your tips are great and people can change it to suit their needs.
