How I saved $210 in 10 seconds

Posted by: vikdulat on: December 8, 2008

As you know, I go to the gym on a daily basis ans I was paying month to month. For the first month that I had the pass, I paid $47.50

When I went to renew for the second month, I thought to myself, “Wait a minute.  I wonder if they have a deal for students.”  (I just started my CGA program. This is why I did not ask for it the first time around)

The customer service rep said they had a deal for students.  The price she told me was $30.  That’s &17.50 savings for each month.  I got the gym pass for 12 months and this resulted in savings of $210.

Calculations

Savings = ((47.50-30) * 12) –> (17.50 * 12) –> $210.

What I intended for this post was to state the fact that you should not hesitate to ask questions or when you negotiate for a item you are buying.  This is just one thing where I saved money.  Just imagine how much you can save if you applied this to other items.

nice job….I am always looking out for ideas to save some quick cash, especially applying my student discount

@ financepuzzle I am glad you liked it. I am the same way. Why should you pay more than you have to right?

It is the same with the military. I always forget to ask for a discount. Thanks for a great posting!

@ Hank – Thanks for the comment and for visiting. Hopefully to see you around again.

Great move. Regardless of how old you are, as long as you are taking some classes, you are a student! Great quick agile thinking on your part. Look for other student advantages and share with us all!

@ doctor S Thanks. I am always looking for other ways to find better deals for a student. I have another one lined up. So stay tuned.

It is also the same with AAA. When my girlfriend and I go out on trips we get hotel discounts and car rental discounts just by having AAA. Plus there are plenty of other places we get discounts with it but those are the 2 main ones.

This is really great advice for college students especially. It seems that nearly anywhere you go, you can find some special student discount or another as a student.

Our local movie theaters charge $1-2 less for students.

The local Apple Store offers discounts on many products (I saved almost $100 on a MacBook recently).

Lenovo and Adobe both have huge discounts on software and equipment in their online stores for students.

That’s just to name a few. Nice job on saving ;)

@ Joshua Raines – Yeah AAA works out great. The best thing to use AAA for is hotel discounts. The rates are better than the corporate discounts.

@ David Leggett – Apple always gives great discount. During back to school, they were giving away an Ipod Touch with a Macbook.

This works for your bills too. I haven’t paid full price for internet in about 10 years. Whenever I move I don’t “move” my cable, I have them disconnect it and then I have new cable installed at my new location and always get whatever the current promotion is. When that promotion ends, I call them and ask if there’s any new promotion running that I could get and if it’s not a discount price, it’s the same price for more speed. Right now I pay $25/mo for 6mbps down and 1.5 up.

@ JT Internet can be end up costing a lot of money but if you just keep calling the company and telling them that you are getting a better deal somewhere, they will give you the better deal.

It is much harder for a company to get a new customer. Therefore, they will try their best to retain the customers they have.

Make sure you guys take advantage of that.

Hi but srry, this post is not so gr8. kindof slly if u ask me. its kinda of dum eh? You said you can save money by asking for a discount? iznt that cmmon sense?

@ Curious If it is common sense to you, then good for you. I am just stating the fact that not many people ask for the discount. They think twice before saying something.

Awesome!
As David Leggett mentionned, you can present your student ID and also save money at the theaters.
In certain cases, you can also save on computers and software, if you are a student.
