12 important life lessons

Posted by: vikdulat on: November 24, 2008

I am now 24 years old.   I have learned a few things along the way.  Here are 12 important life lessons I have learned so far.

  1. There is no short cut.  No what what anyone tells you, there is no shortcuts at all.  You have to work extremely hard to reach your goals.   At the end of the day, if you work hard, you will be rewarded.
  2. Life is not a smooth ride.  Nobody’s life is perfect.  If they tell you it is, they are very lucky.  You will have your ups and downs.  The key is to have more ups than downs.
  3. Family is most important.  Friends come and go but your family will always be there for you.  Big ups to my brother, mother, and father.
  4. People will always talk behind your back.  Everyone talks behind everyone’s back.  I know I used to do it but I have learned my lessons.  You need to find two or three good friends that tell you straight to your face what they are thinking.
  5. The sky is the limit.  If you work hard enough your dreams will come true.  My parents worked extremely hard so my brother and I can achieve our dreams.  If my parents put in the hard work for us, we can do the same for our kids and for them when they get old.
  6. Be yourself.  You should never try to change yourself for anyone (even a chick).  i did that earlier to try to fit in but realized I was cheating myself.  Just be yourself and you will make friends.
  7. Your will have to make sacrifices.  This is especially true in college.  It is either getting an A in a class or watching the basketball game the night before.  I hope you you chose to study.  You can always TIVO the game or watch another game. There are 82 games in a season.  If you miss one, no big deal.
  8. Honesty sets you free.  Always and I mean always tell the truth.  It just feels so good once you let something off your chest and makes you feel lighter.
  9. Live today, worry later. Too many people worry about what’s going to happen in the future.  You cannot control the future, just live life today.
  10. Treat people with respect. No matter how old someone is, he/she should get the same respect.  Just because someone is 8 years old, it does not give you the right to bully them or ignore them.
  11. Believe in yourself.  This is one of the most important things I learned.  If you do not believe in yourself, how do you expect others to believe in you.
  12. If you do not have something positive to say, do not say anything at all.  Too many negative thoughts or comments can really bring a person down.  You should always try to uplift the person.

The most important one to take away from this list to be yourself. If you are not yourself, you aren’t being true to your friends.
